Umbrella Coverage

Just like an umbrella shelters an individual from the rain, an Umbrella Policy covers you from being held personally liable for catastrophic events. It provides liability protection over and above what is offered by a basic personal liability policy (i.e. your home or auto policy).

Who might need an umbrella?

  • Do you own two or more automobiles?
  • Do you own more than two residences, such as a seasonal cottage or rental property?
  • Do you own a boat, snowmobile, all terrain vehicles or other type of recreational vehicle?
  • Do you do any volunteer work or belong to any service clubs?
  • Do you sit on a board of directors or serve as an executive for a non-profit organization?
  • Do you own a condominium?
  • Do you often travel outside of Canada?

What an Umbrella policy offers including some benefits:

The policy is designed to increase and compliment your existing policies. The umbrella policy also provides you with additional coverage for personal injury type of claims that are not included on your primary personal liability policy, such as: Libel, Slander, Defamation of character, Wrongful entry, Invasion of rights of privacy, Wrongful eviction, Humiliation. Other features include:

  • Usually, there is no Deductible on excess liability losses!
  • Legal fees for defense costs are covered.
  • The Limits available are up to $5,000,000 over and above your primary coverage on your habitational, automobile, and/or watercraft policies.
  • Coverage is available worldwide for your personal actions!

Examples of how an Umbrella policy might cover you.

  • While driving in the United States, you injure a pedestrian. The jury awards USD $2.5 Million in damages, but your automobile insurance limit is only CDN $2 Million.
  • A fire accidentally breaks out at your residence and causes damage to your neighbour's home. You are sued for $3 Million, but your policy limit is $2 Million. Who will pay the difference?
  • At the last meeting of your municipal council, you challenged a project proposed by one of the councilors, accusing him of favoring his brother-in-law who is a contractor. The councilor sues you for a defamation of character.
